Abstract:
Ten years ago, in a Special Issue of Domestic Violence Report on Strangulation (19-DVR-6, Aug/Sept 2014), the authors examined the hidden dangers of strangulation—the risk of death, profound health consequences for survivors, and the challenges for law enforcement in building strangulation cases for prosecution without visible injuries. They took an in-depth look at six important areas: 1) Strangulation and Domestic Violence; 2) New Laws Related to Strangulation; 3) How to Investigate and Prosecute Strangulation Cases; 4) How Men Who Strangle Women Also Kill Cops; 5) A Summary of Strangulation Case Law; and 6) Health Consequences of Strangulation Assault for Survivors. Now, a decade later, these six topics have been updated with new research, new case law, and links to new resources that are available through the Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention. This Introductory overview takes a broad view of new knowledge, legislation and case law, and best practices for investigation, prosecution, and prevention through education. Keywords: Strangulation and Intimate Partner Violence
