Abstract: 

Child protective services, the agency charged with protecting children from abuse, very often plays a problematic role in battered women’s child custody cases. This is due in part to the maneuvers of abusers, who often use CPS processes to harass and retaliate against the mother of their children. Instead of being a source of support and empowerment for survivors, CPS investigations may end up being powerful weapons of abuse. Authors Barry Goldstein and Elizabeth Liu pinpoint the uneasy fi t between the mission of CPS and the needs of DV victims, offering their analysis of the problems inherent to this system and providing solid recommendations for attorneys who are forced to interact with the child protective system as they advocate for the protective mothers they represent.
