Abstract:

The complete issue includes all of the articles listed in the table of contents above, plus an editor’s note, “Pursuing Justice in an Age of Discord and Divisiveness.” The first article, “We Have a Lot of Responsibilities, and I Think That Gets Overlooked” explores the views of federal parole officers in Canada about their jobs and their responsibilities and their experience with occupational stress, which they feel is often overlooked. We need to find better ways to understand and to do justice to the work that frontline staff do in their daily efforts to work toward improving the lives of those in their care. “Protecting the Mental Health of Corrections Staff During COVID and Beyond” looks at the responsibility of protecting the mental health of staff during COVID and beyond. Staying with the theme of supporting staff, “Corrections Agencies Have a Responsibility to Actively Identify and Address Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Matters” looks at our responsibility to actively identify and address issues of gender disparity, pay equity, and inclusiveness in the workplace. Finally, our book review editor provides reviews of a number of recent books that examine areas in the criminal justice system that are currently the focus of reform efforts. These include a discussion of Latinas in the criminal justice system, the use of fees and fines, and issues around prosecuting, plea bargaining, pre-trial detention, and the problem of wrongful convictions for crimes that never happened. written by Kay Whitlock and Nancy Heitzeg, challenges reformers and activists alike to make sure that the reforms they are asking for meet tests of justice.
