Abstract:

This issue presents papers and discussions that occurred at the 20th Annual Research Conference. The lead article, by Andrew McWhinnie, Rob Wilson, and R.E. Brown, presents a description of the Circles of Support and Accountability programs. The article discusses the practicalities of setting up and conducting these “circles.” The authors include an overview of the empirical findings on recent research and an evaluation of this innovative program, the purpose of which is to assist in the safe return of high-risk offenders to local communities. Next is a conversation with Sonya Spencer, president of the International Community Corrections Association and executive director of the St. Leonard’s Society of Toronto. President Spencer outlines ICCA’s goals and accomplishments and responds to a question about future conferences and the emphasis on “what matters.” She notes that the intention is not to displace “what works” but, rather, to build on the “what works” concept and to enhance it by adding another dimension to our thinking about effectiveness. Also included in this issue is the speech presented by Dr. Allen Benson, CEO of Native Counselling Services of Alberta, Canada, upon his receipt of the 2012 Margaret Mead Award. Dr. Allen is one of the best known aboriginal leaders working in Canada today and has received recognition for his leadership and innovative practices in the areas of urban housing, justice, corrections, community-based research, aboriginal community policing, children’s services, and aboriginal models of alternative dispute resolution.
