Abstract:

Allen Benson is the chief executive officer of Native Counselling Services of Alberta Alberta, Canada, and president of the National Associations Active in Criminal Justice. This article is based on his address at the annual Margaret Mead Awards Banquet in September 2012. Benson has developed significant and important links between aboriginal and nonaboriginal communities; a good example of this is his recent leadership of the Community Solution to Gang Violence, a program that addresses the need to prevent recruitment of young people into gang activity. His remarks stress the power of individuals, families, and communities, especially aboriginal people, to find their own solutions to their unique issues through processes of healing and reconciliation.
