Abstract:

In their discussion of reentry issues, the authors examine the following key areas of need—impact on offenders’ families, education/vocational skills, employment, substance abuse, housing, mental illness, andthe special problems presented by sex offenders. They discuss the social and community aspects of reentry and remind us that failure to have an effective reentry strategy can be disastrous. They then discuss the problems associated with Project Greenlight and look at the lessons we can learn from this negative evaluation. A brief discussion of the cost effectiveness of reentry programs is presented. The authors conclude that the goal of reentry should be an increase in public safety and argue for the continuity of services as a key aspect of effectiveness in assisting the formerly incarcerated to integrate safely back into society.
