Abstract:

An effective manager of a community-based correctional organization not only has to demonstrate leadership qualities, but he or she must also accept the role of being a change agent; in other words, he or she must have future- as well as systems-oriented skills. If managers recognize the importance of being co-active with various “customers” in the community, the potential for achieving organizational success in the future is likely to be significant (provided that the manager is also willing to plan strategically, evaluate programs, and seek quality-based partnerships, wherever they may be located, with individuals, groups, organizations, and/or universities). The effective and progressive manager will invite his or her staff to “travel the road” alongside of him or her so that a responsible and responsive “team” can be developed, which collectively shares the same desire: to make the organization successful.
