Abstract: 

The article discusses the author’s experiences as a counselor working with the multi-need, criminal, addictive, mentally ill population in a rural county jail. He describes the cases of four clients, the use of slogans in recovery, the problems of stigma from addiction, and the need for respect, kindness, empathy, and acceptance from addiction counselors.
