Abstract:

At least 24 states have approved the medicinal use of marijuana, and four states and the District of Columbia have approved marijuana for recreational use. There are many more questions than answers about how marijuana can best be legalized and decriminalized, and it remains a controversial drug mostly because policy is far ahead of science regarding the impact of marijuana on societal functioning. This paper discusses some of the pros and cons of marijuana legalization for medical and recreational use, the process which it is legalized, and the possible social and criminal justice effects of its legalization.
