Abstract:

Book review editor Russ Immarigeon has assembled reviews of five interesting books under the topics of black lives matter, penal reform, and research roundups. His reviews of Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom and Margaret Bourke-White and the Dawn of Apartheid show the value of visual memory as it is captured by photographs and used to tell informative stories that shape our view of the world. In reviewing Crime and Justice, Volume 44: A Review of Research , a series edited by Michael Tonry that I am pleased to see continuing, Russ comments that “criminology . . . has perhaps overemphasized the evaluation of offender behavior but has not done particularly well on assessing the official behavior of criminal justice practitioners.” Reviews include “Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom” by Lee Friedlander, published by Eakins Press Foundation;“Margaret Bourke-White and the Dawn of Apartheid” by Alex Lichtenstein and Rick Halpern, published by Indiana University Press; “Frank Tannenbaum: The Making of a Convict Criminologist” by Matthew G. Yeager, published by Routledge; “Advancing Criminology & Criminal Justice Policy” edited by Thomas G. Blomberg, Julie Mestre Brancale, Kevin M. Beaver, and William D. Bales, published by Routledge; and “Crime and Justice, Volume 44: A Review of Research” edited by Michael Tonry and published by The University of Chicago Press.
