Abstract: 

This study identifies the challenges faced by elderly probationers with regard to health, income, and probation officer disconnect in conjunction with common practices and procedures for addressing noncompliance with the conditions of probation. It discusses the specific characteristics of elderly probationers, influential factors regarding the perception of elderly offenders, and current available resources for this special population. The authors identify the common hurdles elderly probationers meet when attempting compliance with the conditions of their probation sentence, perform a content analysis of probation chronologies that represent the interactions between probation officers and elderly probationer clients, and review common probation officer responses to the unique needs of these elderly offenders.
