Abstract:

Our book review editor, Russ Immarigeon, presents us with reviews of seven books on several important topics, including three on women and the justice system, two on reentry issues, one on offender decision making, and one on dealing with the incarceration of Japanese Americans during the Second World War. Of particular interest to me is the edited book by Stan Stojkovic on the critical issues and policy directions in prisoner reentry. The six chapters in this book, which cover important issues and challenges facing agencies working in reentry and the design of appropriate and adequate programs, are a good source of information and inspiration. Reviewed here: “Women in Prison: The Bangkok Rules and Beyond” edited by Piet Hein van Kempen and Maartje Krabbe (Intersentia); “Un-American: The Incarceration of Japanese Americans During World War II” by Richard Cahan and Michael Williams (CityFiles Press); “The Oxford Handbook of Offender Decision Making” edited by Wim Bernasco, Jean-Louis van Gelder, and Henk Elffers (Oxford University Press); “Convicted and Condemned: The Politics and Policies of Prisoner Reentry” by Keesha M. Middlemass (New York University Press); “Prisoner Reentry: Critical Issues and Policy Directions” edited by Stan Stojkovic (Palgrave); “In Search of Safety: Confronting Inequality in Women’s Imprisonment” by Barbara Owen, James Wells, and Joycelyn Pollack (University of California Press); “Women of the Street: How the Criminal Justice-Social Services Alliance Fails Women in Prostitution” by Susan Dewey and Tonia St. Germain (New York University Press).
