Abstract:

Individuals with intellectual disability have proportionally more substance use disorders than persons in the general population. Unfortunately, there is a scarcity of resources in treatment options. This article reviews past treatment programs and promising strategies. Programs that have been most effective adapt materials to account for learning styles, specific disabilities, and specific obstacles. Effective group work has incorporated shorter sessions, longer treatment duration, and concrete and repetitive concepts. Answers are found when treatment materials are thoughtfully adapted and individualized.
