Abstract:

In “Worth Reading,” our book editor, Russ Immarigeon, has assembled a number of recently published books dealing with psychiatric hospitals, prison populations, probation, pardon and parole, fines and fees, and public criminology. The edited book by Roger Matthews discusses the emerging field of public criminology, which the review defines as “a conscious effort to merge theoretical perspectives, empirical research, and public policy.” This approach to criminology should prove useful in the efforts of organizations like ICCA to influence public policy from an evidence-based perspective. Titles reviewed include “Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital”by Rusty Tagliareni and Christina Mathews (Arcadia Publishing); “Woody Guthrie’s Wardy Forty: Greystone Park State Hospital Revisited” by Philip Buehler (Woody Guthrie Publications); “Woody Guthrie’s Wardy Forty: The Interviews” by Philip Buehler (Woody Guthrie Publications); “Imprisonment Worldwide: The Current Situation and an Alternative Future” by Andrew Coyle, Helen Fair, Jessica Jacobson, and Roy Walmsley (Policy Press); “Probation: 12 Essential Questions” edited by Fergus McNeill, Ioan Durnescu, and Rene Butter (Palgrave); “Discretionary Justice: Pardon and Parole in New York From the Revolution to the Depression” by Carolyn Strange (NYU Press); “A Pound of Flesh: Monetary Sanctions as Punishment for the Poor” by Alexes Harris (Russell Sage Foundation); “What Is to Be Done About Crime and Punishment? Towards a ‘Public Criminology’” edited by Roger Mathews (Palgrave).
