Abstract:

Addiction is progressive and potentially fatal. Many of the important systems in the brain are negatively affected. Once addiction sets in, only abstinence for a substantial period of time will allow the brain to recover and forge healthy neuronal networks around damaged parts of the brain. Only by escaping from a dysfunctional, intimate relationship with one’s drug(s) of choice (drug addiction) and forging new healthier relationships (recovery) is the person with addiction ever going to know sanity and a return to “healthy living,” where human relationships and human roles can be once again engaged and enjoyed. This process of recovery can be aided by dedicated correctional professionals and committed social supports for the person with addiction.
