Abstract:

This issue of JCC provides three articles that can help correctional practitioners improve their practice. Gaining insight into the impact of growing up in marginalized communities and the effect on individuals, especially those who become gang involved, causes us to think about our interventions with this group of clients. Examining the factors that might prevent offenders with mental disorders from recidivism can enhance our supervisory practice, and exploring the value of the use of rewards as a means to change behavior is a reminder that the “stick” without the “carrot” generally fails.

Keywords: growing up in an urban center; gang involvement; critical first few weeks of reentry; a community corrections center based on community service; books that support the conference theme of widening our perspective
