Abstract: 

Book review editor Russ Immarigeon has assembled reviews of three recent publications-a new biography and two collections of Jane Jacobs’ written and oral presentations: “Eyes on the Street: The Life of Jane Jacobs” by Robert Kanigel; “Vital, Little Plans: The Short Works of Jane Jacobs” edited by Samuel Zipp and Nathan Storring “Jane Jacobs: The Last Interview and Other Conversations” by Jane Jacobs. Also reviewed: “On the Parole Board: Reflections on Crime, Punishment, Redemption, and Justice” by Frederic G. Reamer the author describes many of the cases—involving victims and offenders alike—he grappled with as a parole board member. “Impact: How Law Affects Behavior” by Lawrence M. Friedman is an exploratory report investigating how laws affect people’s behavior; “In the Heat of the Summer: The New York Riots of 1964 and the War on Crime” by Michael W. Flamm presents a chronological account of the Harlem Riot of 1964, the rise of “law and order” Politics; and finally “The Poverty Law Canon: Exploring the Major Cases” edited by Marie A. Failinger and Ezra Rosser, in this collection of 15 articles, the editors divide discussions of U.S. Supreme Court decisions that have been issued over time into three sections: those deemed victories for poor people, those considered defeats, and those likely viewed as having mixed impacts on poor people’s conditions and conflicts.
