Abstract:

The International Community Corrections Association held its 24th Annual International Research Conference in Toronto, Ontario. This article briefly reports on the plenary sessions organized around the theme of “what matters.” The four topics highlighted here include a thoughtful analysis of the current social conditions surrounding the issues of supervision in the community by Dr. Reuben Jonathan Miller; a presentation focused on the importance of social relations by Dr. Beth Weaver; two sessions sharing the common theme of clients that have experienced traumatic events that are impeding their ability to cope or to live meaningful lives by Dr. Joan Gillece and Dr. Jacqui Linder; and a review of a number of studies that demonstrate the rich evidence base for programs that work by Dr. David P. Farrington. The article concludes by introducing the three articles in this issue of JCC that can help correctional practitioners improve their practice.

Keywords: widening the lens of community justice; evidence-based best practices; Reentry; desistance and social integration; trauma-informed care; special policies for young adult offenders
