Abstract: 

This article provides a brief introduction to nonprofit board service, with suggestions for how to make it a valuable experience for both directors and the organization they serve. The keys: (1) asking the right questions before joining a board, (2) understanding your duties and responsibilities, (3) outlining important ways family foundation boards are different, and (4) driving the board’s performance through solid leadership.
