Abstract:

In a very real way, philanthropy has become the R & D branch—the research and development organ—of a free society. This article is based on a presentation by the author at the 2004 Cornerstone Conference of the International Women's Forum, held in Moscow, Russia, in June. These timely remarks were delivered at a time when the former Soviet Bloc nations are still laboring to create their own social orders. The author's viewpoint so well encapsulates the role that philanthropy plays in our society that we wanted to bring it to our readers.
