Abstract:

This article presents an overview of several specific for-profit business practices that have been implemented by successful entrepreneurial foundations. It lists and discusses a number of practices that “translate” easily to a traditional nonprofit, tax-exempt environment, beginning with a discussion of the recent emergence of the Gates Foundation, the Robin Hood Foundation, and the Google Foundation. It then compares these “new age” entities to more established foundations, and it explains why traditional organizations should be concerned about such distinctions.
