Abstract:

Tax returns, other than those filed by tax-exempt organizations, are generally regarded as sacrosanct and unattainable, or at least they used to be. A largely unnoticed provision in the Pension Protection Act of 2006 changed the rules governing returns filed by split-interest trusts. Now these are open to public inspection, just like the Forms 990 filed by tax-exempt rganizations.
