Abstract:

It’s not a good thing, but everyone knows it happens. Often an individual who has no heirs or other family members will leave the major portion of his or her estate to charity, often in a charitable trust or other family foundation. A local attorney or bank may be named to carry out the terms of the client’s will or trust, including administration of the foundation. Initially this may work out well, and the assets and grants of the foundation are invested in the local community.
