Abstract:

The widely publicized Chan-Zuckerberg and Giving Pledge initiatives highlight the advantage of establishing a charitable gifting strategy while one is living: “He who gives while he lives, also knows where it goes.” This article focuses on tax-efficient ways an individual can develop a comprehensive gifting strategy that can be molded and modified as needed to ensure that the individual’s money is going to charitable causes and programs that will use the funds in a desired manner. It highlights the key considerations for first establishing a gifting strategy, maintaining a tax-efficient strategy, and coordinating the gifting strategy with estate planning.
