Abstract:

The proper assessment of an individual’s risk for sexual recidivism is a complicated task. Historical and dynamic variables related both to risk itself and protection from risk need to be considered within a context of the subject’s life situation. Commonly employed risk assessment procedures include some use of research-based risk factors (either within actuarial instruments or as a list to structure clinical judgments), against which protective factors are considered. Treatment completion, for example, represents one empirically supported, typical, protective consideration. (R.J. McGrath, G. Cumming, J.A. Livingston, and S.E. Hoke, “The Vermont Treatment Program for Sexual Aggressors: An Evaluation of a Prison-Based Treatment Program,” submitted for publication (2001), presented at the 19th Ann. Conf. of the Ass’n for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers (Nov. 2000).)
