Abstract:

When new predictive tools are developed in any social scientific field, the first concerns are reliability and validity. In the field of sex offender risk assessment, much concentrated effort has been expended over the last two decades to develop more accurate risk assessment tools, using both actuarial risk technology (ART) and structured clinical judgment (SCJ) approaches. Significant progress has been made in developing both approaches. At this point in the development of risk assessment tools, it is appropriate to begin applying these tools to special populations and developing their validity with these populations. Toward this end, researchers are beginning to focus on intellectually delayed sex offenders (IDSOs), among other special populations.
