Abstract:

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) has been utilized increasingly since the mid-1980s in prosecuting criminals, especially violent and sexual offenders. In many instances, the technology has made it possible for cases to be handled in a more impartial and just manner. As DNA provides a unique identifier linking one individual to a specific DNA sample, prosecutors are more assured that they are convicting the right individual. DNA is also responsible for the exoneration of individuals who had been incorrectly convicted. To date, DNA testing has resulted in the exoneration of 208 men and women through the Innocence Project, and this number continues to rise. (http://www. InnocenceProject.org/.)
