Abstract:

Children are especially vulnerable to violence, including sexual assault, in both the home and the community. The effects of this violence remain with them over the life course, often manifesting in delinquency, criminal activity, and sexual crimes, as well as physical and mental health disorders, sexual disorders, and disruptive behavior. Polyvictimized children are especially at risk and may lose the fundamental capacities necessary for successful learning and a productive adulthood. Using evidence drawn from studies of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations, a national task force made recommendations designed to reduce the effects of exposure to violence and in turn reduce future offending when affected children become adults. This column summarizes the risks and the recommendations for children in AI/AN communities.
