Abstract:
Happy Valley is the central Pennsylvania home of Penn State University and now inextricably tied to the scandal that led to the conviction of Assistant Coach Jerry Sandusky for child molestation, child sexual abuse, and other related charges. The reports of abuse exposed the entire athletic department to scrutiny, and the pressure brought down “Saint Joe” Paterno, the school’s iconic head coach. In this article, Nick Bundra, whose sports industry consultancy is devoted to bringing about positive social and economic change for disadvantaged families and communities, examines the issues raised in the award-winning documentary film “Happy Valley: The Story Behind the Penn State Scandal.”Keywords: Paterno; Sandusky; Curley; Schultz; Second Mile; grooming; N.C.A.A.; pedophilia
