Abstract:
Working with abuse survivors can be deeply rewarding as we see people heal and move forward with their lives. But there are also pitfalls. Walking through experiences of family violence with our clients can traumatize us, leading to excessive involvement with them, or distancing. We can experience sleep difficulties, chronic hyperarousal, numbing, or avoidance—and may fail to recognize that we are being affected. In this article, Zorza describes the symptoms of vicarious traumatization and what we can do to lessen its impact.Keywords:
