Abstract:

Over the past two decades, types of family violence have typically been divided by age of the victims. In this article, based on an address made to the National Institute of Medicine, the author describes how the broader term “family violence” more accurately describes the continuum of violence between family members, and where elder abuse fits on the family-violence continuum. The author also familiarizes readers with Adult Protective Services, and describes the important role of health care providers in intervening when there is violence in the home.
