Abstract:

This piece is an absolute must-read for anyone whose profession involves delving into the inner workings of the minds of sex offenders. Forty-year law enforcement veteran Don Howell reveals the trade secrets of professionals like him who investigate sex crimes and the criminals who perpetrate them. In non-technical language, he describes to readers a methodology used with frequent success; it turns the offenders’ own personal defensive strategies into weapons the investigator can use against perpetrators. As Mr. Howell puts it, “The job of the interviewer is to let the sex offender use all five strategies, and, in fact, lead him to do so.”
