Abstract:

A sexual assault kit tracking system is designed to follow a sexual assault kit as it progresses through the criminal justice system. These tracking systems came about in response to the discovery that certain states were mishandling these vital pieces of evidence, and in some cases, were failing to process the kits entirely. The article examines the characteristics of the sexual assault kit tracking systems within the states that are either using or developing one. Having discovered three different types of kit tracking systems, the authors outline the pros and cons of each.
