Abstract:

Author Emma Katz explores the ways in which coercive control, a pattern of abusive behaviors which perpetrators use to isolate, intimidate, and control their intimate partner, affects children living with the coercively controlling parent. She conducted qualitative interviews with children and mothers who have experienced domestic violence in the past. Although she notes that family members living with a coercively controlling father can be successful in preserving their autonomy and freedom, she also found that coercive control impairs children’s ability to develop confidence, competence, and social skills. She suggests a new standard of strict legal accountability for coercive control akin to the models adopted by England and Wales.
