Abstract:

In this brief article, Veronique Valliere dissects the mentality associated with the subculture of “incels,” men who blame the female gender in general, and feminism in particular, for their inability to find a suitable sexual partner. This group, comprised of alienated and misogynistic males, congregate on websites dedicated to the incel philosophy. Laboring under the mistaken notion that “all women” desire (only) men who match the “alpha male” stereotype—tall, muscular, attractive, and wealthy—they spend their time obsessing over their hatred of women and promoting the incel philosophy, which condones atrocities like rap and child sexual abuse. As the author points out, this subculture presents a real and present danger to the safety and well-being of women and children. She proposes seven strategies that could be utilized by professionals and social activists to counteract this destructive movement and mindset.
