Abstract:

The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Corps is an innovative program that engages AHECs and other community-based organizations to support widespread implementation of Youth Mental Health First Aid™ in communities across the nation. MHFA is a certification that teaches lay people how to help someone identified as struggling with a mental health challenge or illness. The Northwestern Connecticut AHEC leads the implementation of the MHFA Corps in partnership with the Corporation for National and Community Service, the National Council for Behavioral Health, and the national AHEC organization. The MHFA Corps places AmeriCorps members at host sites across the nation. During their 12-month service term, AmeriCorps members are trained as YMHFA™ instructors and provide YMHFA™ certification classes for community members who work with youth.
