Abstract: 

The provisions of the Extension Act that deserve the most attention from financial institutions concern requests for information from the FBI. Specific provisions dealing with such requests apply to consumer reporting agencies, which often have a broad range of information concerning an individual’s financial status and assets, and can thus provide the FBI with an overall picture of an individual’s financial activities. Information requests from the FBI are made by “national security letters,” as discussed below.
