Abstract: 

While the just-passed financial reform legislation—and the regulatory agency rules sure to follow—may help to reduce the risk of using derivatives, no firm can rely on the new law as a panacea. Derivatives will continue to make sense as a tool for financial institutions to use—but will continue to require active risk management if they are to be safely utilized.
