Abstract:

During their divorce proceedings, Stacy Goodman learned that her husband had hired investigators to conduct surveillance of her for over three years. He had private investigators follow, videotape, and photograph Stacy for 12-18 hours per day at home, on vacation, and in public places, at a cost of nearly $1.3 million. After the conclusion of the divorce proceedings, Stacy filed a complaint against her ex-husband for intrusion upon seclusion based on his surveillance, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and three claims related to various forms of abuse under the Illinois Domestic Violence Act based on the years of surveillance. Our case summary explains why the suit was dismissed, and why the dismissal was upheld on appeal.
