Abstract:

This article reviews the history of Alice Walker’s novel and its film and stage adaptations in light of a new film version released in December 2023. The controversial work graphically portrays the reality of domestic violence and has been a source of inspiration in the fight against DV, but it has also been accused of perpetuating harmful stereotypes, such as that Black men are violent toward women. The author analyzes past and current interpretations of Walker’s work, and analyzes a number of subsequent major works by contemporary scholars and advocates, both fiction and non-fiction, that have been influenced by or created as a response to the original.
