Abstract:

This is a first-person account about the author’s contacts with a disheveled looking older couple over the course of several years, “a case study in coping mechanisms” and an example of dual self-neglect. From them, the author learned several lessons, among them to balance the duty to protect with self-determination. She goes on to elaborate on this and the other lessons learned through this couple.
