Abstract:
Self-neglect can pose life threatening danger to the individual involved, as well as significant challenges to professionals and agencies responsible for assessment and intervention. Nationwide, it is frequently reported to APS, as well as health departments and other public agencies. Cases of self-neglect tend to be quite complex, and not infrequently result in community criticism of interventionists. This column is the first of a multipart series on self-neglect. It will discuss characteristics frequently associated with the problem, as well as etiological issues. The clinical practice column of an upcoming edition of VED will address responding to alleged cases.Keywords: community criticism of interventionists; hoarding;
