Abstract:
On June 24 and 25, 2006, the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (NCPEA) held a symposium on self-neglect in Houston, TX. The event was called by President Randy Thomas and brought together stakeholders in elder abuse and neglect policy and practice. Bettye Mitchell, chair of the NCPEA Education Committee, and Paula Mixson, an officer of the Committee, pulled together the program which featured a panel facilitated by Wendy Lustbader, M.S.W. Panelists Carmel Dyer, M.D., Rene Bergeron, Ph.D., and Patricia Bomba, M.D., discussed their work and perspectives on the problem. Georgia Anetzberger, Ph.D., also a NCPEA officer, facilitated a discussion of self-neglect issues portrayed in films.
