Abstract:

The field of adult protective services (APS) has grown increasingly complex over the past decade. The rapidly expanding body of knowledge pertinent to adult protection has far outstripped the states’ abilities to provide comprehensive training to their staffs. The extent to which APS practitioners are trained will largely determine how well they are able to serve the target population of abused, neglected, and exploited elders and persons with disabilities. APS workers who are poorly trained cannot do their jobs effectively. Comprehensive training is needed for new and experienced APS workers, as well for their supervisors The NAPSA board of directors determined that developing a comprehensive set of competencies for APS caseworkers would be of great assistance to states as theystruggled to develop their own training programs. Accompanying this article is a detailed chart of these competencies, listed in the Table of Contents as a separate article,”NCEA/NAPSA Training Resources Development Project November 2005: Core Competencies for APS Caseworkers”
