Abstract:

Community corrections (CC) professionals—pretrial, probation, and parole officers—have the potential to play a vital role in efforts to eradicate elder abuse. With training about the nature of elder abuse, its risk factors and indicators, and what they should do when they suspect that abuse is occurring or has occurred, CC professionals can prevent, identify, and respond to elder abuse. CC professionals also can bring an important, often overlooked, perspective to multidisciplinary teams and other initiatives such as task forces or coordinating councils. This article will help advocates for elder abuse victims, APS professionals, and leaders of multidisciplinary initiatives understand why CC professionals need training about elder abuse to recognize and improve their response to elder abuse victims.
