Abstract: 

In the early- and mid-90s, a number of researchers began exploring elder abuse affecting specific racial or cultural minorities. Many of these researchers presented their findings at a groundbreaking conference, “Understanding and Combating Elder Abuse in Minority Communities,” and in a subsequent book edited by Toshio Tatara, Understanding Elder Abuse in Minority Populations. These studies brought forward unique aspects of culturally specific abuse and highlighted broader questions and concerns. This article discusses some of these issues, and goes on to cover abuse of transgender elders and the discrepancy of that group’s perception of abuse and what the law defines it as.
