Abstract:
Courts request forensic assessments of individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (I/DD) for a variety of reasons. For example, when dealing with cases involving individuals with I/DD, courts may appoint an expert to do a forensic evaluation to serve the goals of family, dependency, or mental health courts. An assessment sometimes is requested to determine if an individual is competent to stand trial. An attorney may also seek an expert’s evaluation of the credibility of a witness. This article focuses on the various ways these assessments can be utilized.Keywords: forensic assessments; I/DD; autism spectrum disorders; ASD;
