Victimization of the Elderly and Disabled

Abstract:

In Illinois, Governor Pat Quinn is looking for a comprehensive solution to the failure to investigate several cases of abuse and neglect that led to the deaths of disabled adults who live at home. A new training program has been established by the Office for Victims of Crime to address the challenges faced by victims with disabilities. A recent $400,000 grant from the Federal Office on Violence Against Women will be used to train law enforcement officers, prosecutors, judges, and community members on reporting and recognizing elder abuse in Provo, UT. Connecticut has delayed the launch of background checks on applicants to nursing homes for a year. In California, an effort is underway to protect dependent adults from exorbitant fees charged by court appointed conservators and trustees. In Buffalo, a woman with a gambling problem was found to be supporting her habit by embezzling from a 77-year old widowed client who had hired her to keep track of her finances.
