Abstract:

A 2012 survey of state APS programs by the National Adult Protective Services Administration found that 47% had experienced a reduction in staff and 87% had an increase in reports and caseloads. In response, NAPSA put out a call requesting data on innovative APS practices. Forty-two responses were received and reviewed by a volunteer panel of eight professionals working in or consulting with APS agencies. Five were assessed to be the “most interesting and promising practices.” NAPSA added four more. To gather more information on the projects, NAPSA staff conducted site visits with five of the agencies and conducted telephone interviews with the other four. This article reviews the best practices and sensible cost-saving measures that emerged from the NAPSA study.
