Abstract:
About two years ago, a woman whom we will call “Martha” became a client of Wellspring Personal Care, a private duty home care agency specializing in the care of survivors of elder abuse and financial exploitation. Twice widowed, Martha lived in the same suburban home for 40 years and had no close relatives. Despite her hearing loss, failing eyesight and mild dementia, at age 96, she still managed to care for herself somewhat independently in her suburban home. This first-person article is a case study of how Martha became subject to exploitation and what resulted. Keywords: missteps lead to loss of autonomy; caregiver abuses trust; Bank Teller Detects Unusual Bank Activity
